Wisesorb vs Hornady Specs
Coverage area
Hornady specifies a coverage area of up to 333 cubic feet. This makes it suitable for larger enclosed spaces like gun safes, closets, or cabinets. Wisesorb does not list a total cubic foot rating. Instead, it states that one gram of silica gel protects up to 120 cubic inches. Since each Wisesorb packet weighs 0.5 grams, a single packet covers roughly 60 cubic inches. You would need many packets to match Hornady’s single-unit coverage. Hornady is the clear choice for large volume moisture control.
Rechargeability
Hornady is designed as a reusable, rechargeable unit. When the desiccant crystals change color from blue to pink, you simply plug the unit into a 110V outlet to dry it out. It is ready for weeks of use after a day of recharging. Wisesorb offers standard silica gel packets. These are not rechargeable. Once the silica gel is saturated, you replace the entire packet. Hornady saves you from constant repurchasing, while Wisesorb requires ongoing consumption of disposable packs.
Form factor
Hornady is a single, rigid unit measuring 8.5 inches in length, 5.25 inches in width, and 2.25 inches in height. It weighs one pound and includes a quick-connect bracket for mounting in safes or lockers. Wisesorb provides 500 small packets. Each packet measures 0.6 inches by 1.38 inches. They are flexible and can be tucked into tight spaces like medicine bottles, ammo cans, or toolboxes. Hornady is better for fixed locations. Wisesorb is better for distributing moisture control across many small items.
Safety and materials
Wisesorb packets are food-grade and safe for direct contact with medicines, food, and diagnostic reagents. They use water-based ink and are cobalt chloride-free, non-toxic, and free from DMF. Hornady is also child, pet, and home safe, containing no harmful chemicals. However, Hornady does not claim food-grade certification. If you are storing food or medications, Wisesorb is the verified option. For firearms or general storage, both are safe, but Wisesorb has the broader safety certification.
Portability
Wisesorb packets are extremely lightweight and small. The 500-pack weighs 10.6 ounces. You can carry individual packets easily in pockets or bags. Hornady weighs one pound and is a single block. It is portable but bulkier. Hornady includes a bracket for mounting, which reduces the need to carry it around once installed. Wisesorb is easier to transport individually. If you need to move moisture control to different small containers, Wisesorb is more convenient. If you leave it in one safe, Hornady is sufficient.
